Monobloco Percussion Workshop

WELCOME TO WORKSHOP MONOBLOCO

Hosted by the Brazilian Embassy of Washington, DC at the Ambassador’s Residence.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from the masters of Rio de Janeiro carnaval and Brazilian percussion!!

Monobloco will work with all levels of experience. Please bring your own instrument.

The workshop uses the instruments of the Samba School: Surdo (bass drum), caixa (snare), repique (high tom), tamborim (small frame drum), agogo (bell), chocalho (shaker) and cuica–in a broader musical universe. Samba is our musical and technical basis, but have also created other arrangements and adaptations to different rhythms like coco, funk, ciranda, marcha, xote, maculelê, quadrilha, samba-charme, congo e ijexá.

In the workshop the following are worked:

• Musicalization: learning rhythmic language, using, among other tools, the Step method byProfessor Lucas Ciavatta.
• Technique: the technique for samba school instruments–Surdo (bass drum), caixa (snare), repique (high tom), tamborim (small frame drum), agogo (bell), andchocalho (shaker)–are developed along with specific exercises.
• Rhythms and Repertoire: the rhythms and variations (samba, coco, funk, ciranda, marcha, xote, maculelê, quadrilha, samba-charme, congo e ijexá) are developed along with songs and arrangements for the creation of a repertoire for the group.
• Ensemble practice: the idea is to create an esemble with the workshop participants, playing rhythms developed in class.
