Halfway to MAD Week Mini-Fest

February 10, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 7:30 pm

$30

Kate Spanos will be teaching an old style Irish step dance workshop at the Halfway to MAD Week Mini-Fest, in preparation for CCE’s Musical Arts and Dance (MAD) Week festival in July! She will be teaching a traditional setting of An Suisin Ban, or The White Blanket set dance. Kate learned this Cork-based version of The White Blanket from Dr. Catherine Foley at the University of Limerick in 2008. According to Orfhlaith Ní Bhriain and Mick McCabe’s Jigs and Jacobites (2018), this particular version dates back to the mid-1800s to Cork dancing master Cleaver, who taught it to Cormac O’Keeffe, who taught it to Peggy McTeggart, who taught it to Catherine Foley. This was a popular set dance in Munster in the 19th century but it faded out during the early 20th century and is one of the less commonly traditional set dances performed today.
