Defend Democracy in Brazil
The political situation in Brazil is dire. President-elect Jair Bolsonaro has pledged an aggressive crackdown on activists, NGOs, the LGBT community, unions, landless workers, and feminists. He promises to plunder the Amazon rainforest, “the lungs of the planet.” This is a politician who asserts that Brazil’s military dictatorship should have killed more citizens, heading one of the largest economies on earth, a country of 200 million people. Come hear Theresa Williamson, executive director of the Rio-based NGO Catalytic Communities, speak about what is happening and how people in the United States can help defend democracy and vulnerable citizens in Brazil. This event is a fundraiser for Catalytic Communities so we will be passing the hat. We will also have live Brazilian music, featuring the samba and forró of Pablo Regis and his band, Batuque na Cozinha. Please come on out to the Takoma Park Busboys and Poets at 6:30pm on January 10th, 2019.
